A new type of drug shows growing promise as a more potent way for many breast cancer patients to cut significantly their risk of a recurrence, researchers reported Wednesday. The latest findings from a large international study also found that the drug, called an aromatase inhibitor, appears to reduce sharply the chances that many breast cancer patients will develop a new cancer in the other breast or have the cancer spread elsewhere.

Older women with breast cancer can increase their chances of keeping the disease at bay if they switch from tamoxifen therapy to a newer anti-cancer drug, says a study out Thursday. The findings suggest that changing the standard treatment for postmenopausal women with breast cancer might reduce the number of women who die from the disease. Each year breast cancer claims roughly 40,000 lives in the United States.
