Donor intent for charitable foundations should be better protected, but respecting the wishes of the donor is primarily the responsibility of the foundation trustees. The Barnes Foundation is one example in which the trustees have not adhered to the donor's wishes. The legal doctrines of cy pres and administrative deviation have been developed to allow for departures or modifications of the donor's instructions. Donors should be specific in their instructions, set priorities and allow for acceptable alternatives. The legal standards can also be modified to better protect the donor's intent, but the main responsibility falls on the trustees.
SEATTLE - The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is shining a light on toilets and the waste that is supposed to go in them in the sixth round of its grand challenges project. The foundation on Thursday announced 88 new $100,000, five-year grants for unusual research, including a number in a new category for the program: sanitation. It's a topic that doesn't get a lot of attention - financially or otherwise - from charitable foundations, said one of the recipients of the grants just announced.

Ben Roethlisberger's charitable foundation is going to the dogs, which is exactly the way he wants it. In July, the Steelers quarterback set aside more than $100,00 to start a foundation to provide companion dogs for the blind, the disabled, and emergency personnel.
When the rich get richer, the non-profit world grows. And it has never before grown the way it has in the past 10 years. The wealthiest Americans have seen their average net worth nearly double since 1995, and many have poured substantial shares of that lucre into non-profit organizations in particular, their own newly created family foundations through which they can better control how their charitable dollars are spent.
Maine charitable foundations have been hit hard by the international financial crisis and are likely to cut back on the more than $100 million a year they have been spending in Maine. The financial crisis has eroded the value of philanthropic endowments, and that may have an impact on grant giving for several years as foundations work to rebuild their base.
