  • Racing to reignite the sun-and our souls-in Danny Boyle's sci-fi collage Sunshine Directed by Danny Boyle Fox Searchlight Opens July 20 BY NATHAN LEE In the observation room of the spacecraft Icarus II, passengers sit on a bench in front of a large, rectangular screen displaying a view of what lies ahead. (How do you reframe the basic tenets of civilization when faced with its imminent extinction?) There will be ghosts in the machine, signs and miracles, manifestations of the intergalactic sublime. Action flick, sci-fi thriller, metaphysical adventure, incoherent allegory, ethical hypothesis, and horror film all at once, this mad multitasker has the agenda of a dozen movies.

  • BALACLAVA, Ukraine - Britain's Prince Philip and saber-waving cavalry reenactors commemorated the charge of the Light Brigade on Monday, 150 years after the doomed British assault against Russian cannons in a Crimean War battle immortalized by the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. The incident, known around the world through the poem's ringing beginning of "Half a league, half a league, half a league onward," was one of the grimmest offensives of the war. Of the more than 600 soldiers who charged against Russian cannon, 110 were killed. In addition, 475 horses were lost, a significant blow to the cavalry.

  • Peter Wehner, a top aide to White House Political Affairs Director Karl Rove, last week sent a memo to conservative activists explaining administration thinking on Social Security. He wrote the key problem is that benefits are indexed to grow with wages over time, which causes Social Security benefit expenditures to grow faster than inflation. The solution, he argued, is to index program benefits to grow only with prices over time, a change known as price indexing. In the key passage, he wrote, "You may know that there is a small number of conservatives who prefer to push only for investment accounts and make no effort to adjust benefits - therefore making no effort to address this fundamental structural problem. In my judgement, that's a bad idea. We simply cannot solve the Social Secu...

  • Concentrated at two former military sites, this year's gathering of openair sculpture engaged land, sea and viewers' perceptions," she writes. A sculpture by Karlis Rekevics called "Bastion, Affectation, Differences," specially created for the "vast Fort Zach beach site" that can be "dramatic but unforgiving," is, says the critic, "at once shelter, pavilion, fantasy architecture and gateway. More mondegreens: "Shirley, Good Mrs. Murphy ehall follow me all the days of my life" ("Surely goodness and mercy..." from Psalm 23); "Haffely, Gaffely, Gaflfely, Gonward"("Half a league, half a league/ Half a league onward" from "The Charge of the Light Brigade"); and a mishearing of the Australian national anthem as "Australians all let us ring [Joyce Carol Oates], for she is young and free" for...

  • Larry Berger was 16 when he slid behind the mike at WYEP-FM, sounded his first bugle call and led the charge of the "Saturday Light Brigade. Now 47, his voice still brings sunshine to the 6 a.m.-to-noon public radio show that mixes acoustic music and live performances with interactive fun, such as on-air puzzles and games that challenge children and adults.

  • Her air of solemnity as she approached the microphone was tempered immediately by her words. Avalon Langevin, a junior at Bucksport High School, walked onstage at The Grand theater in Ellsworth to read the poem "Golden Retrievals" by Mark Doty. It quickly became clear to the audience gathered to enjoy the northern regional finals of the Poetry Out Loud competition that her poem was about a dog. Langevin, bright-eyed and smiling, recited with great animation Doty's sonnet about the spiritual concerns of man's best friend. Though she didn't end up as one of five finalists during the competition, she was one of 21 Maine high school students who, for a few hours one February evening, gave life to more than 50 poems from writers as diverse as Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

  • THE tragic death in combat of numerous marine reservists from Ohio occurred shortly after Steve Bochco's "Over There,' his grim but pro-war tale of the Iraq quagmire, premiered on television (FX channel). The loss of those young men also occurred too late to have any impact on Ohio voters, who narrowly elected a pro-war Republican in a special congressional election. Thinking about these events reminded me that back in the 1930s, kids in public school still read poetry. One of my favorites was Alfred Tennyson's tale of courage and an unquestioning sense of duty, "The Charge of the Light Brigade,' with the line, Theirs not to reason why.

  • In "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," Edward Gibbon anticipated President Bush's criminal stupidity in post-Saddam Iraq: "History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies, and misfortunes of mankind. Mr. Bush's mulish insistence that Iraq's Sunnis, Shi'ites and Kurds can be cajoled into harmony with American guns and tutorials after 4,000 unbroken years of despotism and division is wasting the lives of brave Americans every bit as prodigally as the ill- conceived Charge of the Light Brigade wasted the lives of the British warriors in the Crimean War. Will House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid please stand up and protest: "Mr. President, you shall not crucify any more our sacred soldiers on a cross of ignorance?"
