Same-day voter registration works in Maine. I am a ballot clerk in Woodstock and we have a system for checks and balances on registration or change-in-address forms on the day of voting. We have done this for years without a problem.
If anything, especially in rural Maine, all people -- Democrats, Republicans and independents -- need to be encouraged to vote. Making people come an additional time to the town office can be a burden, even more so when people are working and the town offices aren't open late.

SEYMOUR --The registrars of voters are conducting the annual voter registration canvass. Those who receive a canvass letter are asked to return it to the registrar's office at 1 First St. as soon as possible. Only voters who have contacted the Post Office with a change of address during the past year will receive a letter regarding confirmation of voting address.

Thank you to stranger for gift We were in the east side mall this week and we stopped by the sports store. While in there, a gentleman was talking to my husband Jim about the Green Bay Packers, of which my husband and the gentleman's wife are diehard fans, and he picked up a Champion hat and put it on the counter and said, "Here, this is for you," to my husband and continued to pay for it. It was an expensive hat. My husband was shocked that a complete stranger would buy him a hat. We are from Peoria but like to come to Bloomington to shop every once in a while. We just wanted to say thank you very much to the man who bought the hat. God Bless your family. Fears of continued disenfranchisement at the polls and disillusionment with the political process are real, and our community and nation must address the causes directly. But African Americans also face more subtle challenges, including some unintended consequences of the same reforms that cleared the way for us to exercise our rights under the 15th Amendment to the Constitution. One of those reforms, the process of redrawing voting districts to prevent Black votes from being "gerrymandered" - - drowned out in mostly white districts - has been a tremendous benefit in getting Black representatives to Tallahassee and to Washington. But the concentration of Black voters in just a handful of districts in Florida has had its price. In fact, it may be one reason that, while Black folk ma...
