C. public schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee's cost-saving plan to shutter Bertie Backus Middle School and 22 others has upset community members who say the school and its memorial to a teacher and student killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks are hallowed ground.
It's almost like, would you pick up a grave and move it?" said Michelle Cottom, the mother of student Asia Cottom, who was aboard American Airlines Flight 77 when terrorist hijackers crashed the jetliner into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. "Would you pick up a monument and move it? That's what they wanted to do so it would be forever there.

Our City's schools have made enormous progress over the last five years, but we still have a long road ahead," said Mayor [Michael R. Bloomberg]. "The new strategies we are announcing today will continue that progress and help more students make the difficult transition from elementary school to middle school to high school. Middle schools are where too many of our students begin to lose their footing, so I want to thank Speaker [Christine C. Quinn], Chancellor [Joel Klein], and the task force for coming up with such a sound set of recommendations to help us continue moving forward.
"The middle school years are crucial years for our children. I am confident that the steps we are taking will help us address the needs of this vulnerable student population," said Chancellor Klein. "Thank...

Williams is enormously talented as a teacher, lawyer and administrator, and I rely on his sound advice and good judgment every day," said Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos. "Vanderbilt and Nashville are fortunate to have such an engaged and committed leader, and both the university and the city are better because of David.
"As a- youth at Durfee Middle School, Coach Williams inspired me to want more from life, he was a strong Black man working in the inner city and giving it his all," said [Johnny Tinker]. "I was an overweight kid with plenty of attitude, but Coach never gave up on me and he was the same way with every student, never a harsh or negative word for anyone, I work with kids today because he inspired me."

In my most recent column, I addressed the immense value of teachers as well as the increasing need to attract high-quality graduates into the profession. Improving student outcomes involves not only drawing new teachers into the profession, but better preparing them for the demands of the profession. Amidst an environment of mediocre (or worse) math and reading proficiency in many parts of the country, schools of education are under increasing scrutiny. As Michelle Rhee, the highly publicized former D.C. schools chancellor recently stated, "We're going to back-map where they (teachers) came from, which schools produced these people. And if you are producing ineffective or minimally effective teachers, we're going to send them back to you." Her comments, alongside the results of a recent...
