Most every older city has its vanished landmarks, and Parkersburg is no exception. Many longtime residents, when asked to recall a building they miss, will cite the Chancellor Hotel built by William Chancellor.
There were 120 rooms in 1924 with 100 more added later. Opened for business in 1903 at the corner of Seventh and Market streets, the grand old hotel experienced a disastrous fire in 1911. The fire resulted in the deaths of three boys, who were crushed by a falling brick wall.
