NEW YORK - The Mets threw a welcome-home party for Jose Reyes on Tuesday night, his first appearance since July 2, creating the illusion that life in Flushing is about to improve. It's a seductive thought, especially with Reyes and Carlos Beltran in the same lineup again, not to mention David Wright, who's due to come off the disabled list Friday.
But none of that will change the reality in the standings. Despite Reyes' two hits in a 4-2 win over the Cardinals, the Mets still were 11 1/2 games behind in the NL East, and, more significantly, nine back in the wild-card race. BaseballProspectus.com calculates the Mets have a 1.1 percent chance of getting to the playoffs - reason enough to focus on what's really at stake in the final two months.

Its the springtime National Signing Day, and maybe its a good day to look back as well as ahead on Kanawha Valley fortunes in major college mens basketball. Too often, it seems, talent in our own backyard is downgraded as much by locals watching the game as coaches recruiting in it. There seems to be this attitude that were just not good enough to play with the big boys. In some ways, thats an understandable notion. Its not like area courts are still producing Jerry Wests, Hot Rod Hundleys, Chris Smiths or even Brett Nelsons on a regular basis. However, major college basketball is a vast world 345 teams this past season and theres plenty of room for plenty of talent. Sometimes, it just takes time. Sometimes, it just takes smarts. When a player picks his school, he needs to be realist...

HUNTINGTON - As most college football coaches are wont to do, Doc Holliday is guarded with information concerning game plans and personnel decisions and injuries. Add missed tackles to the list. The Marshall football team has placed extra emphasis on tackling this week with No. 13 Virginia Tech (3-0) coming to Huntington this Saturday for the first time in 71 years to face the Thundering Herd (1-2). Last week, Ohio gained 559 yards total offense the most since the Hokies piled up 605 yards against the Herd two seasons ago. The MU offense had six first-half turnovers against the Bobcats last Saturday, and that couldnt have helped the defense, but the D didnt do itself any favors, either. If youre in single digits in missed tackles for a game theres a great chance youre going to win that...

The combination of a tight economy, the early Thanksgiving deadlines and the fact that the Central District still had two teams playing in the Central Region football championship games, and the East Coast Bowl, I never really got a chance to write a traditional Thanksgiving column.
To keep it simple, brief and in the world of Top 10 list, here goes:

HOUSTON - It took Justin Turner a long time to make his way into the Mets' lineup, starting in the back of the line in the Mets' spring training second-base competition.
But as the other competitors fell by the wayside - Luis Castillo was waived late in camp, Brad Emaus won the starting job and then was waived after just 14 games, and Daniel Murphy headed to first base this week when Ike Davis went on the disabled list - Turner finally got his chance to play every day. The payoff for the Mets came much quicker than his ascension as Turner delivered a double, his first major league home run and five RBI Sunday to lift the Mets to a 7-4 win over the Astros.

The Buffalo Bills placed right tackle Cornell Green on the injured reserve list Wednesday in order to make room for newly acquired Shawne Merriman on the 53-man active roster.
Green injured his knee in the fourth quarter of the Bills' loss to Jacksonville on Oct. 10 and has missed the past two games. Green had battled some nagging injuries before that game, as well. That means undrafted rookie Cordaro Howard will have the chance to start the rest of the season at right tackle -- or as long as he can hold the job.

Students applying to college often feel overwhelmed, and it would be nice to think that once they get to college, life becomes easier. Many adults fondly remember college as a time of football games, fraternity parties and midnight pizza with roommates. Sure, final exams could be stressful, but this was a chance to spend four years exploring your interests, having fun and not being overly worried about the future.
But in recent years, the anxiety starts in high school or even earlier, and continues through college. The pressure to get into selective colleges has created a stressful high school environment as students spend every waking hour trying to rack up perfect grades and test scores, along with a list of dazzling extracurricular activities.
