  • The HIV epidemic in China and Vietnam is on the increase among injection drug users (IDUs). We report on the results of a pilot outreach study in northern Vietnam and southern China to test the feasibility of a peer-driven intervention (PDI) to prevent HIV among IDUs. In the PDI, recruitment relies on a "chain-referral" model in which IDUs carry-out the core outreach activities that salaried outreach-workers/peer-educators traditionally provide. A 6-month follow-up was built into the study design to measure possible changes in IDUs' risk behaviors. The impact results of the pilot study are reported bearing on several different measures, such as changes in IDUs' rates of lending or borrowing used syringes, willingness to enter into drug treatment, baseline and follow-up recruitment succe...

  • Even in an age of modern and high-tech communications, the most powerful and effective means of generating new business is through word of mouth. People turn to trusted friends or colleagues for recommendations regarding product or service providers. And because word-of-mouth referrals are free, you can't beat the return on investment that a positive referral can generate. While a successful word-of-mouth marketing chain can sometimes start on its own, don't assume that the phone will start ringing off the hook.

  • Following the minority stress model as a framework, we examine the associations between racial and homosexual stigma, substance use, and sexual risk behavior among a respondent-driven sample of Latino gay and bisexual men and male-to-female transgender persons (GBT) in Chicago and San Francisco (N = 643). We use structural equations to test such a model and disentangle the possible effects of the different stigmas and their corresponding dimensions (i.e., perception, experience, internalization). Findings revealed distinct pathways to sexual risk. Two are typified by experienced homosexual stigma and internalized racial stigma via multiple drug use, and two are characterized by experienced racial stigma and internalized homosexual stigma via alcohol use.

  • We present analyses based on selected findings from a NIDA-funded project entitled, "An Exploratory Study of Ecstasy Distribution" (2003-2006). We conducted in-depth interviews with 120 men and women in the San Francisco Bay area who had sold five or more doses five or more times in the six months prior to the interview. The research focused on the motivations and circumstances surrounding the decision to initiate sales, sales settings, the characteristics of both sellers and buyers and their relationships. It also focused on negotiated order and social identities. We describe the ways in which a sample of educated, housed, and employed Ecstasy dealers' attitudes and practices compared with more marginalized groups from other drug market studies. These findings suggest attention to soci...

  • This article uses data from a study of 122 adult women drug users residing in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area to identify associations between economic stressors related to occupying disadvantaged statuses, institutional integration, and drug use. The data stem from targeted sampling and ethnographic mapping procedures. The findings suggest that experiencing stressors related to economic circumstance and daily subsistence increased the likelihood of drug use. Results also indicate religious involvement and kinship networks are independently and negatively associated with drug use, but fail to reduce the negative effects of economic stressors on drug use. The author suggests that institutional integration, however limited, may be a formidable deterrent to drug use. Continued ident...
