There are a number of ways by which inmates try to adulterate urine samples submitted for drug testing. These techniques are aimed at escaping detection or invalidating test results. There are several elements essential in effective and defensible drug testing programs. Secure collection and a chain of custody are among these elements. Techniques to prevent or detect adulteration of urine samples for drug screening and confirmation analyses are presented.

In this week's issue, I reported on a new NOPD initiative that has police officers checking to see if the doors of cars parked on public streets are locked. If they are unlocked, the officers take it upon themselves to open the cars, without the owner's permission, and lock them.

We studied 23 different commercial products for collecting, storing, securing, and mailing urine samples analyzed for illicit drug use. Despite their tamper-indicating features, all of these products can be quickly and easily tampered with, either before or after sample collection, while leaving little or (usually) no evidence to be detected. Either false-positive or false-negative drug test results could then occur. A brief review of other security practices and standards associated with urine drug testing suggests there may often be additional serious security problems. Given the importance of drug testing and the fact that illicit drug tests have a huge impact on people's careers, livelihoods, and reputations, better security, especially better tamper detection features, would seem w...
