Statistically speaking, with the number of miles I drive, it's going to happen," [Ed] continued. "Everybody speeds sometimes. But it's weird that I've never gotten a ticket when I was deliberately speeding, only when I didn't know I was going too fast." He also noted that "four out of five" of his tickets were from out of state, where, he surmised, "cops think you aren't going to come back and contest them.
"In Vermont, you should learn whether you've been charged under a local ordinance. If so, whether it is a validly enacted local ordinance, and then whether you were really in the zone of that ordinance," [Jonathan Stevens] explained. "The state has to answer all those questions. If the answer isn't appropriate, you might win on a technicality."
"Probably not. But this is your day i...

Chicago magazine: Marry in Dubuque "Gay Chicago Magazine" is promoting Dubuque as "the logical, obvious and most desirable of wedding destinations," in its current issue. The magazine staff collected marriage applications on Friday that they will hand deliver to the Dubuque County Courthouse for filing. In an article titled, "Iowa Gay Marriage Comes to Illinois," Jonathan Lewis writes that Dubuque has "its bucolic charms as a vibrant river city," with "steep hills and river bluffs." He chronicles the city's history from Julien Dubuque through the gentrification of the Port of Dubuque. "And it now serves symbolically as a gateway -- a 'Key City' you might say --for gay and lesbian couples to finally realize their dream of getting married, even if it is a right still not granted in our ow...

A certified copy of the policy or policies, not an insurance certificate, will soon be the recommended document for confirming what liability coverages are being maintained by contractors. This is a strong statement and one that most assuredly will generate negative responses from many producers, underwriters and insureds. At first, it might appear that large numbers of authorized representatives are making statements on certificates about coverages that do not exist. This is because what happens to certificate holders who rely on these documents to their detriment usually leads to litigation. Obtaining a complete policy is better than obtaining only an additional insured endorsement. At least one can better determine the extent to which additional insured coverage may apply. When the b...

For months I've been telling everyone they need to have a passport by Jan. 1 to go anywhere outside the United States. The government changed it again!
If you are going out of the country by air, you still need a passport and have for several months. However, if you are leaving the country by land or sea, they have extended the date you will need a passport until sometime next summer. No specific date has been given. So, if you are going on a Mexican Rivera cruise in January, or plan a trip by car to Canada this spring, don't worry if you don't have your passport yet. You will still need proof of citizenship, i.e. your original birth certificate or a certified copy of your birth certificate plus photo identification. However, I suggest you don't put off applying for a passport; you will...
