To obtain a passport for the first time, applicants will need proof of U.S citizenship and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver's license. A certified copy of a birth certificate (not a California abstract or photocopy) is the best proof of citizenship. Applicants will also need two photographs. Photo service will be available at the "Passport Saturday" event. Parents applying for children younger than 14 must both be present along with the child. Cash or checks are accepted to pay the required fees. A new passport costs $97.

After reading this column, I want everyone who has a passport to get it and check the expiration date. Keep that date in mind, because if youre planning a trip, your passport needs to be valid six months after your return date. I realize that doesnt make sense to a lot of you; if a passport expires on April 10, 2006, then it should still be a valid passport on April 9, 2006. I agree with you, however, the governments of most countries, including the United States, do not. They want your passport to be valid for at least six additional months. I dont know why, but Im certain it has something to do with security.
