BLOOMINGTON - With the stock market a nerve-wracking roller coaster and bank certificate of deposit rates frustratingly low, what's a conservative investor nearing retirement to do if he has a few dollars to invest? The answer, according to financial experts, may include buying CDs with varying maturities as well as careful investment in mutual funds, bonds and blue-chip stocks.

Many consumers today prefer nonconfrontational channels to consider financial sales and marketing information. Consequently, community banks that incorporate free, 24-hour telephone lines with recorded information into their advertising efforts can generate as much as a fivefold greater response over traditional marketing efforts using telephone numbers answered by a live company representative. Through its service partner, Taylor, Bean & Whitaker Mortgage Corp, ICBA Mortgage is offering all ICBA community banks free access to a special technology-based, toll-free consumer telephone information system that can generate not only a greater marketing response through an anonymous recorded message, but also turn every call into the system into a precise and actionable sales lead. This study examines the factors that are related to the growth of credit union liabilities. We use individual credit union data on deposit categories and their associated interest rates to measure the effect of interest rate changes on the growth rates of total shares and five of its subcomponents. After controlling for credit union size, previous growth, and market interest rates, we find that while total share growth is related to individual credit union regular share and money market rates, it is most affected by share certificate rates. With the exception of share drafts, the growth in other deposit categories is significantly affected by the interest rate a credit union offers for those particular accounts. Finally, we provide evidence that, in general, the growth rate of a deposit...
Finding a certificate of deposit rate offering a good return is no easy task, especially these days, when interest rates are extremely low. If you are in the market for a CD, however, several websites offer tools to help consumers track down the best rates. Here are a few sites worth visiting:
Title X of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (Dodd-Frank Act) transferred rulemaking authority for a number of consumer financial protection laws from seven federal agencies to the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (Bureau) as of July 21, 2011. The Bureau is in the process of republishing the regulations implementing those laws with technical and conforming changes to reflect the transfer of authority and certain other changes made by the Dodd-Frank Act. In light of the transfer of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System's (Board's) rulemaking authority for the Truth in Savings Act (TISA) to the Bureau, the Bureau is publishing for public comment an interim final rule establishing a new Regulation DD (Truth in Savings). This interim final r...

A few northern New Jersey banks are offering free checking accounts with interest rates higher than just about any savings account or certificate of deposit, and with no minimum balance. They also reimburse other bank's ATM fees as part of the deal. Here is a sampling of the offers:
If you sign up for a bank money-market account, you will find it a convenience in handling routine deposits and payments. Transactions may be limited to six per month. It pays interest if you keep the balance above, say, $2,500. But the interest rate at most banks is as low as three-tenths of l percent on a balance of several thousand dollars. That was no problem in the era of low interest rates, but it's ridiculous in these days when rates are rising and a certificate of deposit pays up to 4 percent or more. Of course a CD ties up your money for a set period.
Stagnant interest rates and a flat yield curve are affecting the advice that local financial consultants give to clients who are interested in the bond and certificate of deposit markets. The Federal Reserve announced last week that interest rates will hold at 5.25 percent and that isn't expected to change any time soon, according to industry analysts. This has caused the rate for long-term investments, those with a 30-year maturity date, to be relatively the same as the rate for short-term investments, such as those with a five-year maturity date. This situation is known as a flat yield curve.
