Eight graduates of a new economic development program offered by Centro de la Familia de Utah received certificates of graduation on Sunday and are prepared to take first steps toward launching new businesses and providing help to communities in Mexico.
Sergio Palacios, a board member of the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said many organizations contributed to getting the new program off the ground and include the Mexican Consulate, Centro de la Familia, the Utah Small Business Development Center and his organization. Palacios said the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce sponsored four of the graduates of the first class, and will continue to help participants.

As a Utah teacher, I can't help responding to the Sept. 25 article regarding the University of Utah study, commissioned by Centro de la Familia de Utah, that acknowledges the achievement gap between white and minority students in Utah. The article highlights Latino students specifically.
There should be little debate about the reality of academic achievement gaps, but the number of reasons clicked off in the article contained a glaring omission: students' own home and cultural responsibility. I have taught low-achieving students for nearly 30 years and find two primary barriers to the academic achievement of minority students, when other learning problems are accounted for. After less than a year on the job, Kim Langton is stepping down as chief executive officer of Centro de La Familia de Utah.
Langton submitted his resignation, saying he wanted to return to public school administration. The resignation was effective immediately.
