  • On Thursday, heavily armed Maoist rebels attacked a police station and the home of a Congress leader in the state of Chhattisgarh in India's heartland. On June 29, they assaulted and killed 26 members of India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The Maoist movement, tens of thousands strong, is active in more than half of India's states, a red ribbon that stretches from the Nepalese border down the Bay of Bengal coast. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calls the Maoists India's top internal security threat; Home Minister P. Chidambaram terms Maoism "a graver problem than jihadi terrorism." In U.S. terms, the rebels' geographical reach extends from New York City to Key West, Fla., and Washington, D.C., to Indianapolis. Yet, even as the U.S.-India strategic partnership expands in areas fro...

  • In India's smoky, crowded cities, some people say, "So what? Someone has to pay the price of progress." Some even say, "Lets face it, these are people whose time has come. Look at any developed country - Europe, the United States, Australia - they all have a 'past.'" Indeed they do. So why shouldn't "we"? Two years ago, when things were nowhere near as bad as now, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described the Maoists as the "single largest internal security threat" to the country. This will probably go down as the most popular and oft-repeated thing he ever said. For some reason, the comment he made at a January 2009 meeting of state chief ministers, when he described the Maoists as having only "modest capabilities," doesn't seem to have had the same raw appeal. He revealed his government...

  • The city of Bastar in India, as in Kashmir and Assam, is an excess of natural beauty that belies the bloodshed between the government and leftist rebels. More than 650 people were killed last year in Bastar by Maoist-related violence, more than half of the 650 such deaths nationwide. The Maoists, whose ranks are estimated at 10,000 armed cadres, are strongest in forests, about one-fifth of which they control. Motlagh shares his experience tracking down these rebels and conveys what he found out about them.

  • MUKJAR, Sudan - Uncovered by a restless wind, skulls and bones poke above the thin dirt in this corner of Darfur, lying surrounded by half-buried, rotting clothes. A short, bearded man named Ibrahim, 42, scratches through the sand. He is quiet and serious, close to tears. There are other, bigger gravesites elsewhere, he says, but the bones he is looking at are those of 25 people who he is sure are his friends and fellow villagers.
