Jeanne Evans-Cox has been named executive director of the Central Business District Association in Virginia Beach. Evans-Cox is Hampton Roads' regional representative for Democratic U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, who announced last week that he will not seek re-election next year. Her previous jobs included chief of staff for Democratic U.S. Rep. Owen Pickett and executive assistant for the Virginia Beach schools superintendent.

Kanawha County Schools' central office Christmas party received a special gift this week - the second-ever performance by the Central Office Christmas Choir. The Rwandan ambassador to the United States told members of a Portland-based group Friday night that they are helping his region of Africa address three of its most pressing issues: reconciliation, education and income generation. The Central Division has produced the Eastern Conference champion in three of the past four years. But only one team, the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons, was able to come away with the trophy. The latest victim was Cleveland, which was swept by the San Antonio Spurs last June after defeating Detroit in the conference finals. This year's opponent for the Western Conference could well come from this division again.
