• Rhode Island School District Will Rehire Fired Teachers

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. -- A school district that gained the support of President Barack Obama for promoting accountability after it fired all its teachers from a struggling school announced on Sunday it had reached an agreement with the union to return the current staffers to their jobs. The two sides said a transformation plan for Central Falls High School for the coming school year would allow the roughly 87 teachers, guidance counselors, librarians and other staffers who were to lose their jobs at the end of this year to return without having to reapply. More than 700 people had already applied for the positions.

• Five Star Bank Donates to Honeoye Falls-Lima Schools

Marty Birmingham, Eastern regional president for Five Star Bank, on Tuesday presented a donation of $750 to the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District as part of its ongoing "Children and Education" program, according a release from the bank. The funds will provide financial support for educational community activities and projects not funded by the district's general operating budget.

• New Human Resource Position Approved for Rsu 73

LIVERMORE FALLS -- Regional School Unit 73 directors voted 10-1 Thursday to approve a new administrative services assistant position in the Central Office to process human resources and data management in the district. The wage for the position is $18 an hour for eight hours a day, 225 days a year, Superintendent Bob Wall said. It equals $32,400, not including benefits.

Josephine L. "Jo" Slacer, a veteran educator and advocate for teachers and retired teachers, died Thursday in Buffalo General Hospital after a brief illness. She was 86. Born Josephine LaBruna in Buffalo, she graduated from Lafayette High School before receiving a bachelor's degree from D'Youville College and a master's degree in education from Canisius College. She then embarked on a long career in education, beginning in the Letchworth Central School District in Bliss, followed by several years in Niagara Falls.
