The Democratic Party of Taos County (DPTC) will be having elections for precinct officers, County Central Committee members, county party officers and State Central Committee members. The upcoming party elections are an opportunity for registered Democrats to participate in democracy at the local community level.
The process sometimes gets a little confusing, so I would like to outline some general guidelines to clarify some of the election procedures for the public. I would also like to notify everyone about some changes to the locations of precinct meetings being held across the county. If you are interested in having the Democratic Party in Taos County continue on a path of progress, please join us and participate in your precinct meeting.

A quiet revolution is stirring in the country, and Taos County is an important reflection of this grassroots resurgence that is bringing together old-line Democrats and new Progressives. In just a few short weeks, what looked like a familiar, but bumpy road of political in-fighting in Taos turned into a free-flowing highway. This new brand of Democrat may spell trouble for candidates who still rely on old-style party politics that may be obsolete. Former Taos County Central Committee Chairman Billy Knight's success in bringing 65 percent of the county's registered Democrats to polls in the November 2005 election re-ignited the interest of old-line, "padrone" Democrats and energized the new Progressives who are more focused on national issues, such as the war in Iraq and health care. Whe...

Former Del. Richard Cranwell of Vinton will step down later this year as chairman of the state Democratic Party, ending a five-year tenure that included a string of successful elections and a disappointing 2009 campaign.
Cranwell said Tuesday that he will stay on as chairman through the November elections and turn over the leadership reins when the party's state central committee meets in December.

SOUTH JORDAN -- Salt Lake County Republicans crushed a proposal Thursday night to kill primary elections and institute a winner- take-all convention process.
The idea, pitched by central committee member Lyle Decker, would have allowed for single candidates to advance without an intra- party challenge by garnering a simple majority at the county GOP conventions held before each election. Decker told the 250 or so delegates gathered for the quarterly meeting that he was motivated to propose the change after witnessing people in his neighborhood, who he knew to be Democrats, registering at the polls as Republicans so they could vote in the party's closed primaries.

A Democratic candidate for alderman in Fair Haven's 14th Ward is challenging the nomination process. Evelyn DeJesus-Vargas is seeking the aldermanic seat for a second time, after waging a primary last year against former Alderman Joseph Jolly who resigned as of Sept. 25. The ward committee nominated Erin Pascale in a 26-11 vote, but DeJesus-Vargas has filed complaints with the party's State Central Committee and the state Elections Enforcement Commission, alleging that the public meeting was not properly noticed and that the meeting was called in violation of state and party rules.
It is for these reasons that I would challenge the endorsement vote that took place that night and ask that all interested candidates be required to petition in accordance with all applicable laws," her lett...
