  • CENTERVILLE -- While students and teachers in the Centerville City School District didn't have to go to school for two to five days during the outage caused by the Sept. 14 windstorm that swept through the area, the same wasn't true for school administrators and others involved in keeping the schools up and running. The schools lost some of the food in their cafeteria freezers, and before schools could return to operations Wednesday, their cafeterias had to be replenished with food for school lunches, said Terry Riley, associate school superintendent for the school district.

  • Bhanu Raghavan has spent years educating children, parents, teachers and other occupational therapists in workshops, but she can now reach an unlimited audience thanks to, "Self-Care with Flair," a program that she co-authored with former co-worker, Ginger McDonald. When you look at special needs children in school, they have difficulty with their self-care needs," said Raghavan, an occupational therapist working with students with disabilities in the Centerville City School District. "Helping them with fine motor skills is challenging. Lot's of parents approach us saying their children have trouble zipping their coat up, or getting ready for school on time. Ginger was addressing this all the time and so was I, so we decided to write a program to help the children, step-by- step.

  • CENTERVILLE -- Centerville City School District's new treasurer, Mitch Biederman, 45, was chosen from more than 15 applicants, according to Terry Riley, associate superintendent for the Centerville school district. He will take office July 1, replacing Steve Hinshaw, who became the city of Centerville's treasurer. Biederman had been a top candidate four years ago, when Hinshaw was hired by the school board, he said.

  • CENTERVILLE -- Jim Hawley, who taught for 35 years in the Centerville City School District and was a longtime member of Centerville Optimist clubs, died Aug. 5 after a four-year battle with cancer. He was 61.

  • CENTERVILLE -- The testing results are in and the Centerville City School District is celebrating. Celebrating Success 2004-2005" was the title of Associate Superintendent Terry Riley's presentation to the school board on the results of the March 2005 achievement and proficiency testing in the district.

  • How do you get voters to pass a school levy in May they just defeated in November? It's not easy, especially since Centerville City School District voters were not all of one mind. A strong contingent, 48 percent of those who went to the polls May 5, opposed the levy. In November, the vote was lost by about 1,000 votes. The same levy, according to the May 5 unofficial final tally, passed by a vote of 6,809 to 6,200, or 609 votes. What made the difference?

  • CENTERVILLE -- More than 350 municipal volunteers working in municipal offices and as members of council-appointed boards and commissions were recognized at the annual Volunteer Salute held at The Golf Club at Yankee Trace. Those recognized include members of the Stormwater Drainage Task Force, Board of Architectural Review, Board of Tax Appeals, Centerville Arts Commission, Centerville Property Review Commission, City Beautiful Commission, City Planning Commission, Personnel Appeals Board, Sister City Committee, Friends of Benham's Grove Board, Charter Review Commission and Centerville City School District Personnel Appeals Board.

  • The elk is a symbol of pride for students and parents in the Centerville City School District, but Centerville Landscaping Inc. co-owner Jim Teske is hoping to also make it a symbol of peace for Centerville and Washington Twp. Teske and business partner Tom Shields are planning a dedication ceremony at noon Monday, Aug. 25, for the recently purchased bronze elk statue that will soon stand in front of Centerville Landscaping, 1082 W. Spring Valley Road, Washington Twp.

  • CENTERVILLE -- There were seven teachers nominated for the 2011- 12 Centerville City Schools The district honored elementary school teachers last year and secondary school teachers this year. Christi Yokajty, who teaches business administration management in the career technology department at Centerville High School's Central Unit, was chosen as district's Teacher of the Year at the Centerville School Board meeting Monday, Sept. 26.

  • WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County -- He Dog Elementary School, on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, has 140 students in preschool through fifth grade -- all Native American, Lakota Sioux. He Dog Principal Deb Boyd is Native American. They've had their first snow, yet many don't have winter hats, gloves and scarves, said Kevin Wisniewski, an Ida Weller Elementary School counselor in the Centerville City School District, who's helping connect the two schools.
