If you shop at Mother Nature's holiday store, it won't cost you a lot to make centerpieces, wreaths and other decorations.
In fact, everything in her store is free. Your only expenditure is the effort it takes to cut some greenery and twigs and to gather pine cones, seed pods, mosses, lichens and mushrooms, pebbles and other interesting items.

After school on Thursday afternoon, kids took turns showing off their best bicycle tricks in the parking lot outside of Smithton Middle School. Some let go of the handlebars and balanced with no hands, others stood on one leg and one even managed to stand on the seat of his bike.
The gathering, which involved "oohs and ahhs" from eager youngsters waiting for their turn, was part of one of Smithton's newest after-school activities -- bike club.

At Scott Sutton and Devin LeFata's wedding next month, don't eat the cake.
At least not the tiered impostor that will be on display during their reception at the Engineer's Club in Mount Vernon. What's beneath the frosting won't be butter cream-flavored, but rather perfect rounds of Styrofoam -- surprisingly deceptive in appearance, but unsurprisingly not tasty.

An investment of just 20 minutes and 20 dollars can result in a holiday centerpiece that will impress your guests without breaking the bank. Homeowners, decorators and florists from around the Miami Valley employ a variety of methods for making quick, affordable decorations for the holiday season. In early December Susan Gay-le, 61, took part in the inaugural Grafton Hill Historic District Holiday Home Tour. She takes pride in accessorizing her home for the holiday season, but having an event that showcased her home and her decorating took it to the next level.
My idea for my dining room table is to have a floral oasis with hidden greens inside of it. I collect Christmas tree toppers and plan to use those to create a forest look and finish by sprinkling fake snow," she said.

A three-story gingerbread house decked out with stained-glass candy window panes and wee icing icicles dripping from the roof can make for an awe-inspiring sight on the holiday table. And if you've got the degree in architecture needed to pull it off, and you don't mind the taste of spiced cardboard, have at it.
But there are easier, and tastier, edible centerpieces that are just as impressive.

If the bride walking down the aisle wants to check on table centerpieces at the reception, the Inn at New Hyde Park has her covered.
Well, few brides are quite that obsessively in need of connection, but the Inn at New Hyde Park is leaving nothing to chance, unveiling a refurbished and crisped-up website compatible with mobile phones. Accessibility via smartphone was a prerequisite for the site's redesign, according to Elizabeth Jaeger, director of media and communications, who recognizes brides leave meetings at her venue and immediately pick up their smartphones to search for pictures of other brides who held their weddings there.
