Jun 26 was the 20th anniversary of the Center for Victims of Torture, which provides technical assistance and training to more than 30 torture treatment centers in the US and 15 others on five continents. On the same day, the center released letters to George W. Bush and to the Minnesota congressional delegation to further its mission to heal the wounds of torture and stop torture worldwide. But since the president repeatedly, piously, insists that "they do not torture," this letter will not move him to obey American and international law on torture.

LEADERS AGAINST TORTURE
On Oct. 13 at the University of Dayton, UD president Daniel J. Curran became the first president of a U.S. Catholic university to sign a national petition calling for the president to reject cruelty and torture. Cincinnati Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk was among the first U.S. Catholic church leaders to sign the Declaration of Principles for a Presidential Executive Order on Prisoner Treatment from the Center for the Victims of Torture.
