DALLAS, June 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Allard Research and Development, the world leader in small to medium-scale ethanol fuel production systems, announced today the world's first self-powered modular cellulose ethanol refinery utilizing cellulose feedstock grown as part of the system in hydroponic shipping containers. A 20 gallon-per-hour modular cellulose ethanol refinery module with feedstock grow containers will have a 3,600 sq. ft. footprint. Over the last decade or two Brazil has made great progress in reducing its foreign fossil fuel dependence by establishing a massive program of ethanol production from sugarcane.
The country is almost energy-independent except for imports of natural gas from Bolivia and has announced its intention to export oil in a few years. The ethanol production program has resulted in Brazil's widespread use of fuel mixtures (85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline known as alcohol) and of flex-fuel vehicles. Can we in the United States realistically achieve similar results with corn, or perhaps cellulose-based ethanol and bio-waste?
