WASHINGTON - Royal Ahold NV, the Dutch retailer that overstated more than $1 billion of profits, reached a settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday, ending a 20-month investigation into accounting fraud. The SEC opted not to demand a fine from Ahold because of its "exceptional" cooperation with the investigation, said Thomas Newkirk, an SEC enforcement official in Washington. Former Chief Executive Officer Cees van der Hoeven, 57, and former Chief Financial Officer Michiel Meurs, 53, also settled with the SEC by agreeing to be subject to tougher sanctions.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - The executives in charge as Dutch retailer Royal Ahold NV plunged into one of Europe's worst financial scandals were convicted of fraud Monday but let off with a fine and no prison time, as judges found they bore little criminal guilt. The court fined former CEO Cees van der Hoeven and former CFO Michiel Meurs 225,000 euros ($290,000) each and gave them both nine- month suspended sentences.
