Larry Pickens was a part of the large Wilson family in south Los Angeles. Pickens together with his mother Ola Mae Wilson, her ten brothers and sisters, and the whole Wilson family came from Jackson, MS to Los Angeles in the early 1960's. The family thrived in their new hometown. Pickens attended Carver Junior High and Jefferson High School where he graduated with the class of 1971. Pickens felt strongly that it was important to give AfricanAmerican children in foster care a stable home. He and his life partner Jeff Horton adopted two Black sons in 1995 and 1999. Pauline Paquette Raymond, a caregiver and leader, died Sunday after a long illness. She was 92. Mrs. Raymond was a nurse for several decades in Portland, starting at the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary. She continued to work there after the merger with Maine General Hospital in 1955, and was a fixture at Maine Medical Center before taking a job in the late 1960s as director of nursing at the Jewish Home for the Aged, now known as The Cedars.
