Monsignor Roger A. Reynolds, who coordinated CCD religious education in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark in the '50s and '60s and later served parishes in Bergen County, died Tuesday. He was 94 and resided at Our Lady of Victories Church in Harrington Park.
Father Reynolds, a graduate of Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception Seminary, was the archdiocese's director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, a position which earned him the nickname "Mr. CCD." He began to reorganize CCD education in the early '50s, moving away from a system of sacramental classes for children preparing to receive First Communion and confirmation. He promoted a system for all children, with programs for elementary, junior high school and high school age, as well as sessions for adults.

Archbishop Jerome Hanus in 2005 issued a statement regarding Love Holy Trinity Blessed Mission: "No undertaking is to claim the name Catholic without the consent of ecclesiastical authority in the local church." Yet LHTBM still claims to be Catholic. The archbishop stated concern about "a lack of balance in the group's spirituality, the authoritarian approach of the leader, secretiveness, characteristics of a cult, harmful impact on families, and the questionable quality of the understanding of the Scripture.
True. If the archbishop doesn't consider LHTBM "qualified to offer acceptable Catholic programs," then why are some members eucharistic ministers and CCD teachers?

You printed a letter (May 3) beautifully written by Karla Steger, whose aunt recently passed away. Her aunt's daughter is a longtime member of the cult The Love Holy Trinity Blessed Mission. She didn't come home for her mother's services. I, too, have three family members in this cult; familial alienation abounds. Karla's aunt was not allowed to see her daughter for over four years prior to her death; she was denied closure. Such an untenable situation ...
Equally untenable is the fact that cult members remain in positions of authority in the Catholic Church. They remain eucharistic ministers, CCD teachers, etc. How can this be? If they want to attend Mass, that's fine. But let's not have them on the altar when they are in direct defiance of the bishop.
