Wall Street clashed with Washington on Wednesday over the causes of the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression, with political leaders and financial chieftains trying to cast the blame on each other. The highly anticipated drama played out on the first day of hearings by the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, a bipartisan panel appointed by Congress charged with finding the roots of the crisis. But panel Chairman Phil Angelides, a Democrat and former California state treasurer, made it clear that he already concluded that Wall Street - investment giant Goldman Sachs, in particular - were the primary culprits.
One of the older books on my shelves is "A Short History of the United States" by John Spencer Bassett, a professor at Smith College, and revised by his son, Richard Bassett. It was published in 1938. It is interesting to note what the book had to say about the causes of the Great Depression, which began with the stock-market collapse in 1929:
Now that a plan to help the economy recover has been implemented, it's time to look back at the causes of the biggest downturn since the Great Depression. Identifying the causes of the collapse are key to ensuring that such a catastrophe is avoided in the future. The "more regulations and oversight" bandwagon was loaded with both Democrats and Republicans in the fall, but inevitably, as the economy recovers, many will hop off. Therefore, the time to remake the regulatory world is short.
REDLANDS - On May 15 Hatfield Buick/GMC, thought to be one of the oldest Buick dealerships in the country, was notified that General Motors would terminate its franchise agreement in October 2010. Bert Hatfield started selling electric and Franklin cars in 1909. He became a sub-dealer for Buick in 1912 and a franchised dealer in 1913. Since then, Hatfield Buick has weathered two world wars and the Great Depression - and given heavily to local causes, to the tune of $200,000.

New Tech Institute Students at New Tech Institute went to the administrative offices of Fifth Third Bank recently to present a report on the current state of our economy to John Daniels, affiliate president; Lloyd Winnecke, senior vice president; and Greg Harpenau, senior vice president.
The students began by researching the causes of the Great Depression and compared it to the "G...
Several Farwell school fourth-graders in Dee Dion's class made astute observations Thursday when they talked about why they're writing letters to ExxonMobil protesting high gas prices.Among them was Sade Dennis, 10. Dennis said she's concerned that high gas prices mean the cost of everything will go up, leaving more people unable to buy things, which could lead to another Great Depression. Her comments prompted me to look online for the top causes of the Depression. According to Wikipedia, causes included an unwillingness by the Federal Reserve to supply reserves when banks faced a run on withdrawals. Other causes were: a combination of high consumer and business debt, ill-regulated markets that permitted malfeasance by banks and investors, a growing inequity in wealth, and natural disa...
