ELLENSBURG -- The Wild West will make a comeback near Ellensburg this weekend when the Eaton family conducts its annual cattle drive. About 300 Herefords and Angus will begin their journey down Burbank Creek Road on Saturday morning. By 11 a.m., they're expected to arrive at Canyon Road and will rest at the Big Pines Recreation Area.

Live cattle futures took a nosedive in late November-early December, and analysts don't see an immediate end to the downside. Rich Nelson, director of research at Allendale, says consumers are switching to pork and chicken, lessening demand for beef. Dan Pavilonis, senior market strategist for Lind Waldock, agrees that cattle's slide can be attributed to demand issues. Nelson notes that live cattle has already surpassed its downside by 2¢-3¢ and expects more downside in January.
About a dozen longhorns rambled through the heart of Motown this week - part of a promotion by Chrysler for its new Dodge Ram truck. TEDDY'S CATTLE DRIVE: A Story from History
The third Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive takes place May 5- June 10. For five weeks, south Australian cattle drovers will guide a herd of 500 cattle southeast along the Oodnadatta Track. Passing through a mixture of plains and undulating countryside, visitors can partake in any of the seven four-night, five-day tours, each with distinct highlights and themes, including "Dawn of the Cattle Drive," "Rail & Ruins," and "Sounds of the Outback." Visitors can drive the herd as long as they like, purchasing any number of individual tours, which are all priced the same. Each day, the drive will cover approximately nine miles and will combine the adventure of droving with Outback luxury. The San Bernardino County Fair opens today in Victorville with a slew of parades that will honor some of the heritage that defines the High Desert. Three events - the Car Cruise, Cattle Drive and the American Heroes Parade - will all take place late this afternoon.
