INDIANAPOLIS - Once it was considered a huge cattle call, with the herd being thrown onto the scales then run through a series of holding pens to determine which beef is prime, and which is only choice. The aura surrounding the NFL's Scouting Combines has changed somewhat recently, however, to that of a mass job interview.
Teams now want to find out as much as they can about the person as well as the player, and use the combines as a tool to delve into the past and hopefully the future of prospective employees. With draft picks at a premium these days, clubs don't want to waste one on a player with character flaws capable of wrecking his career.
