• Freddie Mac, Freddie Mac Foundation, and Catholic Community Services Join to Help Katrina Survivors

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Catholic Community Services of the Archdiocese of Washington (formerly Catholic Charities) has received $475,000 from the Freddie Mac Foundation to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina who relocated in the national capital area. The money will pay for independent housing, groceries, utilities, and other household expenses for 33 families (about 100 people) for three months. Freddie Mac employees will also adopt the 33 families, and will donate and deliver goods and volunteer time to help the families get back on their feet.

• Organization Expands Services to Meet Hurricane Katrina Victims' Needs

Andrea Jackson-Ross of Gentilly sat on a cushioned chair Sept. 30 waiting for a check to be delivered in the lobby of Catholic Community Services in Baton Rouge. Homeless and jobless since Hurricane Katrina, Jackson-Ross was one of 150 displaced people social workers and counselors see daily. Catholic Community Services, a small Baton Rouge business served about 42,000 people annually before Katrina. Need has since grown exponentially. It seems like a zillion right now, said Carol Spruell, communication coordinator for Catholic Community Services. I couldn't even tell you how many people we've been serving.
