NMFS is closing the directed herring fishery in management area 2, because 95 percent of the catch limit for that area has been caught. Effective 0001 hr, February 20, 2012, federally permitted vessels may not fish for, catch, possess, transfer, or land more than 2,000 lb (907.2 kg) of Atlantic herring (herring) in or from Management Area 2 per calendar day until January 1, 2013, when the 2013 allocation for Area 2 becomes available.

Fishing on the upper catch-and-release section of the San Juan River is reported as good with cream UFO's, black or olive zebra midges, chocolate foam wing emergers and gray or brown RS2s. Dry- fly action is good with Parachute Adams or Comparaduns. Flow is at 504 cfs (cubic feet per second) and visibility is 4 to 5 feet. On the lower, open waters, fishing is good for rainbows and browns with salmon eggs, worms and the same flies as for the upper section.

Good weather, spring break and a growing optimism in the economy. It's the perfect storm for a successful Mardi Gras, said Robert Watters, owner of Rick's Cabaret and president of the Bourbon Street Merchants Association.
Business at Rick's Cabaret was up 20 percent for the first weekend of Carnival while Rick's Saloon saw a 25 percent increase. Watters did not provide specific revenue amounts.

The escalating academic standards of the nation's education law snagged a growing number of Wisconsin schools unable to make progress targets in 2007-'08, including some high schools with lofty reputations.
Rufus King High School in Milwaukee and Arrowhead and Menomonee Falls high schools in Waukesha County all were named Tuesday as not having enough students with disabilities meet the academic proficiency standards established by the state to comply with the federal No Child Left Behind law.
