Steve Dobbins in the past four years has closed 10 plants, laid off 1,400 workers and refocused his textile company on products that won't go toe-to-toe with competition from lower-cost factories in China, India and a handful of other nations.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- American history is being preserved at the North Carolina birthplaces of two of the nation's early presidents, James K. Polk (1845-49) and Andrew Johnson (1865-69).
Although their legacies have been overshadowed by other 19th century presidents such as Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson, both Polk and Johnson served at critical times in U.S. history. Polk pushed an expansionist vision during his term, adding about 500 million square miles to the Western United States. Johnson, vice president under Lincoln, helped heal the struggling nation after Lincoln's assassination.

RALEIGH | A national union and its North Carolina state affiliate are trying to create a new political party in the state designed to challenge three Democratic members of Congress who voted against the final health care bill.
North Carolina First movement spokesman Greg Rideout said Friday the Service Employees International Union and State Employees Association of North Carolina are leading the effort. The union groups must collect more than 85,000 signatures by June 1 to be a certified party and get candidates on the November ballot.
