The taxpayer claimed a $33,629 casualty loss deduction for damage sustained by his pickup truck in a rollover accident in California. The taxpayer was cited for drunk driving in connection with the wreck, which occurred after he had been driven home from a party and took his truck to visit his parents.

When the IRS called the California Society of CPAs urgently seeking assistance in California for what then was reported to be up to 20,000 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, members answered the call. CPA Mitzy Barreto was one of hundreds of members who volunteered to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina who had been removed to FEMA disaster recovery centers in Los Angeles as part of a joint effort with the IRS, AICPA and CalCPA. The IRS was there to help victims claim a casualty loss. Until the need dissipates, CalCPA volunteers will help evacuees assemble records, fill out claim forms and file tax amendments.
