  • Now that the danger of frost is over, amaryllis forced into bloom can be placed outdoors for the summer. The potted bulb should be placed in a shaded location and fertilized with 1 teaspoon of 5-10- 10. Bring it back indoors before frost, and let the soil dry completely so the bulb will go into dormancy. After leaving it in a cool, dark place for eight weeks, bring it back into the light and begin watering again. In another eight weeks, your amaryllis should bloom again. Dwarf, compact plants seem to be what everyone is trying to breed. If you are looking for taller plants to add drama to your summer season plantings, try hollyhocks, sunflowers, cleome and castor bean plants. Be careful with the castor beans; the seeds are highly toxic.

  • Dissident Bulgarian journalist Georgi Markov died mysteriously in 1978. The Scotland Yard postmortem revealed, imbedded in his leg, a BB studded with tiny holes. It had been shot into Markov with an umbrella rigged as a pellet gun. The holes in the BB had been packed with ricin. Similar cloak-and-dagger incidents speckle the history of the common shrub Ricinus communis, many dating back to ancient times. This native of northern Africa is more commonly known as the castor plant or castor bean plant. • Americans have a love of large things - stretch limousines, king- sized beds, XXXXL clothing, big gulp drinks and super-sized meals. This intrigue has expanded into the plant world, where interest in tropical plants and other species having unique or large leaves has skyrocketed. The most beautiful leaf casting I've seen was from a gigantic ornamental rhubarb. Plants with large leaves are not newcomers in the landscape. Cannas and hostas have been important parts of gardens for many years. Cannas offer a dramatic vertical dimension in the garden, and many cultivars, such as Tropicana' or Bengal Tiger,' produce leaves with unusual color and striping to add additional interest.

  • At least once a year I write about the risks that some plants pose to pets or people, while also noting the importance of keeping these risks in perspective. Some innocent plants have an unwarranted reputation as poisonous. With people receiving gift plants, and decorating with plants, centerpieces, wreaths and trees, it is a good time to know what can hurt your child, Puff, Fido or yourself.
