In 2003, Jaguar set out on a risky mission: Develop a mass-production vehicle using an aluminum monocoque body design. That was the charge given to the team developing the flagship XJ sedan. Even before the XJ rolled off the line at Jaguar's Castle Bromwich, UK, plant, designers and engineers began penciling the next challenge, the 2007 XK Coupe/Cabriolet (code-named "X150"), which itself utilizes the same aluminum monocoque processes perfected for the XJ, while incorporating new advancements gained as the sedan worked through its own trials and tribulations. The efficiency improvements and higher penetration of automation enabled Jaguar to limit manpower on the XK line to approximately 160 hourly workers. Jaguar is expanding its XJ range to six distinctive model derivatives. The lineup will include two Short Wheelbase (SWB) vehicles: the XJ8; and the high-performance XJR. Four Long Wheelbase (LWB) models complete the model list, including: the XJ8 L; Vanden Plas; Super V8; and the new, limited edition flagship Super V8 Portfolio. All Jaguar XJ models are powered by 4.2 liter V8 engines that mate to 6-speed automatic transmissions. Horsepower ranges from 300 horsepower for the naturally aspirated XJ8 (SWB), XJ8 L (LWB) and Vanden Plas (LWB) to 400 horsepower for the supercharged models which include the XJR (SWB), Super V8 (LWB) and the Super V8 Portfolio (LWB). Torque rating for the normally aspirated motor is 310 pound feet, with the supercharged engine delivering 413 pound feet.
