  • This past weekend, SCHOP! had a client event in Harlem. It was called a "BBQ Graduation Party." I menuplanned all of the items I was going to put on the grill; however, when I went over for the initial consultation, there was no grill. Plan B: Bring my trusty cast iron grill/griddle and work that oven to the ground! For dessert, [Bryan] made cupcakes, chocolate and vanilla, with butter cream frosting and peach cobbler. And I can't forget about my favorite Bryan-creation: his lemon chiffon that starts with his amazing fresh lemon curd, mixed with organic (Bryan wouldn't have it any other way) whipped cream. The chiffon was served over a delicious berry salad. I could bathe in it! The strawberries at Fairway were so sweet this week, too. [Kysha Harris] is owner and operator of SCHOP! SCHO...

  • Don't let The Griddle's sign fool you. Though it boasts a cast-iron skillet and the folksy phrase "Good Cookin'," the joint is most definitely not a greasy diner dive. Opened in 1948 in Winnemucca, Nev., then purchased by Mike and Betty Aboud in 1960, The Griddle has spent the last halfcentury perfecting Betty's original recipes. In 2005, after son David purchased the company, The Griddle expanded into Idaho, opening a location in Meridian first and then one in Eagle. After visiting the expansive Griddle location in Meridian for brunch, and scarfing down a plate of flaky and not-toogreasy Crabcakes Benedict ($11.29) with asparagus and grated hashbrowns and a cup of freshly ground [Dawson Taylor] coffee, I decided to check out The Griddle's dinner chops at tbe Eagle location. Surrounded ...

  • It's been a busy week for SCHOP! this week with weekly clients, small home events and trying to have a little personal fun myself. However, it was all very "Celestine Prophecy" there is no such thing as coincidence. It started when I went to my homegirl Dane's potluck birthday party. It's the best because we all bring something and try to outdo the next one. It's comedy really. At the behest of the birthday girl I just brought a Carvel cake (which are fabulous with those little crunchies). Marj brought her marinated Asian apricot wings, Lisa her baked beans, Nichelle her potato salad and Shena whipped up a delicious salad of arugula, pistachios, tomatoes and dried cranberries. The grill was poppin' with chicken, shrimp and Omaha Steaks' hotdogs and hamburgers. I had a "wile out" session...

  • Ever since I interviewed hamburger maven George Motz about his guidebook Hamburger America: A State-by-State Guide to 100 Great Burger Joints earlier this month (TheDaUyPage.com, 5/07/2008), I've had burgers on the brain. I've been thinking about what he told me about Hodad's - a place in Ocean Beach, Calif., that has "quite the griddle, an old cast-iron model. It's seasoned. It gives the patty a kind of terroir." What a thing to aspire to. At this unassuming little lunch counter, order a respectable homemade soup ($2/cup) and sandwich ($3.50) lunch. The menu is limited, but, heck, it's lunch. Choose your sandwich bread (from Clasen's bakery in Middleton - white, wheat or multigrain) and your interior elements (ham, turkey, roast beef, corned beef or summer sausage), and then pile on yo...

  • Yolanda Puyana's grandmother always celebrated el Dia de los Muertos, or the , by lighting candles outside the front door to guide her husband's soul home. This snapshot of Puyana's childhood in northern Mexico is as clear as her memory of taking homemade food to the cemetery for a sunset picnic on her grandfather's grave.

  • The secret to good flatbread and tortillas (not to mention amazing pancakes) is a heavy flat griddle. Unfortunately many griddles, including the widely available rectangular cast-iron models, are too narrow to accommodate large flatbreads and usually lack handles, making it a challenge to work with them.

  • Now that food trucks are out and about in Memphis, part of the fun for local food lovers is finding the 25 trucks that have been certified since an ordinance was passed in the spring giving the the vendors flexibility on where they can set up. Talyon Swan, who lives in the Berclair area, is a big fan of the Los Jarochos taco truck. (The word " Jarocho " is a person, item or style of music from Veracruz, Mexico.)
