SALT LAKE CITY -- The historic facade of the Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution has returned to Salt Lake City's downtown Main Street after three years and a major facelift.
The cast iron facade was removed for construction of the landmark City Creek project and reinstalled just north of its former location, attached to the west face of what will be a new Macy's department store. The downtown icon represented Salt Lake City's legacy of industry, cooperation and prosperity, said Bill Williams, director of architecture and engineering for City Creek Reserve Inc.

The city of Portland will tap into a rich repository of historic cast iron for a project in Ankeny Square that promises to revive the square for pedestrians and those interested in exploring the city's architectural history.
Portland's Historic Landmarks Commission on Monday unanimously approved a plan by the Portland Development Commission to begin the makeover of the nearly 60-year-old park. Ankeny Square may be best known as the site of the Skidmore Fountain. It is on the north side of the Central Fire Station, which was built in 1952.

The Portland Building is technically "historic" now. Last week the National Parks Service released a document formally announcing that the 29-year-old structure is worthy of historic preservation.
Now, I happen to think that the Portland Building is a hideously malformed monstrosity not worthy to bear the name of our fair city, but that is neither here nor there. The move does raise a question about Portland -- where are the historical buildings, and what are we doing to preserve them? How is it that something as new as 1982 counts as "historic" in this city?

When anybody who was anybody in 1800s Portland built a building, it had to have a cast iron facade. Showy and sexy, the frontages shouted status.
Today, the showpieces known as the Ladd Cast Iron Collection are stacked like cordwood in a Southeast Portland storage yard, waiting for the city, developers, architects and preservationists to find a way to use them in the Skidmore/Old Town historic district.
