Having seen several of their bandmates die over the years, members of Southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd have had times when they entertained the thought of quitting, says guitarist Ricky "Darkhorse" Medlocke. The tragic plane crash in 1977 that claimed the lives of three members -- Ronnie Van Zant, Stave Gaines and Cassie Gaines -- was bad enough, but many more losses were to come. The next few decades brought the deaths of Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson. Then, just last year, keyboardist Billy Powell died of a heart attack, and bassist Ean Evans succumbed to cancer.
When Mid-Southerners next see Rickey Medlocke, who performs at Southaven's Snowden Grove Amphitheater tonight as part of the triple guitar attack of Southern rock stalwarts Lynyrd Skynyrd, he may well be holding a wedding ring instead of a six-string. We're looking at getting married in Memphis in November," says Medlocke, who is engaged to professional singer and native Memphian Stacy Plunk. Lynyrd Skynyrd never totally got the respect it deserved when it was still a viable band in the 1970s. The band had a huge fan base, was commercially successful and was treated fairly by most critics. Still, many other opinion-makers dismissed Skynyrd and other practitioners of "Southern rock" as redneck good ol' boys and gals who were satisfied to simply wave the Confederate flag, boogie and sing about the joys of Jack Daniels.
