In Niger, we've just started a project dealing with planned parenthood and child-trafficking issues," says [Bill Ryerson]. "With an average eight kids per family, the population is set to quadruple between now and 2050 -- it's currently at about 12.8 million. The sub-Saharan country, he notes, already is experiencing a "serious famine.
Ryerson, of course, is by no means the only person concerned. Cornell University scientist David Pimentel has published a series of papers in which he calculates the long-term "carrying capacity" of planet Earth according to current U.S./Europe standards of use and waste. He suggests the globe can support about 2 billion people. We're rapidly approaching 6.5 billion. "There's no way," says Ryerson, "we can take that population to a Western lifestyle equ...

I read the recent Sun Journal article on large families with great interest. The parents of those families obviously considered their responsibilities to their children quite carefully. The article did not mention whether they had considered their responsibilities to the planet and to the society of world inhabitants.
The world is under great strain to sustain the population already present. Global warming is just one example of the way humans have outstripped the carrying capacity of the Earth.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- ProCon.org's 34th and newest website, http:// climatechange.procon.org, explores the debate over whether human actions or natural events are primarily responsible for global climate changes. The website helps to stimulate critical thinking on global climate change by presenting the best pros, cons, and facts so people can formulate their own informed perspectives on this complex and important issue.
Natural occurrences, such as changes in the sun's radiation and ocean current shifts, as well as human activities, including burning fossil fuels and deforestation, are reportedly contributing to climate change. Over the 20th century global temperatures have risen between 1 degree F and 1.4 degrees F. This rise has taken place concurre...
