I have prepared a place for you. I allowed you to depart this life in your home with Venus, your cat, on your bedside. Now, I will wrap my arms around you and carry you to your new home. • As we await the salt-water paddling season to get into full swing, it's a good time to take stock of our equipment and brush up on paddling etiquette. Dive into the equipment piles you've managed to bury over the winter. Drag out all your gear, give it a close inspection, and replace anything that looks a little sketchy, frayed, or funky. That includes your boat, your life jacket, skirt, dry suit, wet suit, strobes, lights, radios, rescue and safety gear you carry - everything. This is the stuff that will bring you home safely.

  • The dream for Marin City's [Felecia Gaston] began with the lyrics of the song "Swinging on a Star" that she and her mother used to listen to in 1950s segregated Georgia: "Would you like to swing on a star/ Carry moonbeams home in a jar/ And be better off than you are/ Or would you rather be a mule? She has no greater fan than Robert Lewis-who was 5 when he became a charter member of Performing Stars or, as he laughingly puts it, one of the first youngsters in her program, "a test-tube baby." He would be the kid who would be the first in the many nascent Performing Stars programs, the kid who would, through his efforts and Gaston's guidance, take the kinks and snags out of a new activity to assure it ran smoothly and gave to the kids what it was that Gaston was looking for in all her pr...

  • Last week's column found me in a race against time as I whipped the oats out of every last one of the 98 anemic horses pastured under the hood of my '95 Neon. The mission was to make it across a fair chunk of Holmes and Wayne counties in time to catch the singing skit of my daughter, Sylvia, in her last-day-of-school talent show. It was a perilous journey, as I reached speeds approaching 50 miles- per-hour on certain stretches of wide-open, downhill, tailwind- driven straightaway. And I was clicking along right on time when I was brought to a sputtering stop by a creature that had crawled forth from the ancient depths of the Killbuck Marsh. This isn't a command to run down to mall and spend your life savings restocking your home -- repairs and learning to use appliances effectively is more often than not the best choice, especially considering the energy and resources required to produce new machines.

  • GOLDEN, Colo. -- One answer to lessening the country's dependence on foreign fuel imports might be hiding in the six-pack you carry home from the liquor store.
