REDLANDS - It is the end of a chapter at Redlands Community Hospital as two volunteers retire after heading up a program for nearly 30 years. Redlanders Mary Dalton and Carol Houston have been the two primary volunteers for the hospital's Lifeline program. For 28 years, they have installed emergency support systems for local seniors.

After a new tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis vaccine came out last year, the vaccine committee recommended a dose for children when they are 11 or 12 to give them better protection into early adulthood. A bacterial meningitis vaccine also was recommended for that age group. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) yesterday pulled an ad from its Web site after Hispanic groups accused Democrats of unfairly equating illegal aliens to terrorists. To liken Latino immigrants to bazooka-toting terrorists not only undermines the positive relationship our party has with this community, but it also lowers us to a despicable level as breeders of unfounded fear and hatred," Houston City Council member Carol Alvarado, a Democrat, said in a letter to Sen. Charles E. Schumer, the New York Democrat who heads the DSCC.
