Cara Carleton "Carly" Sneed Fiorina's career has followed an uncannily cinematic arc.
A restless law school dropout becomes a master sales rep for Ma Bell, then rises higher in business than any other woman, running Hewlett-Packard Co. for six years. She wrestles that stodgy Silicon Valley institution into the Internet age, needing every ounce of her charm to win a huge merger contest.

DAYTON -- NCR Corp. President and Chief Executive Mark Hurd, who spearheaded the company's strong comeback last year, resigned Tuesday to become president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Co.
Hurd, a 25-year veteran of NCR, will take over HP, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based global technology company, on Friday. He replaces Robert Wayman, who was named interim CEO in February after Carleton S. "Carly" Fiorina was fired.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hewlett-Packard announced Tuesday that it will lay off 14,500 workers, or nearly 10 percent of its staff, over the next 18 months as part of a restructuring plan that the company's executives hope will turn around the struggling fortunes of the giant computer and printer maker.
The cuts come four months into the tenure of Mark V. Hurd, who took over as chief executive on April 1. Hurd was named to lead the company after the board dismissed Carleton S. Fiorina for failing to carry out the ambitious corporate strategy that she had crafted to compete with the likes of IBM and Dell Computer.

DAYTON -- After Hewlett-Packard lured NCR's Mark Hurd to be its CEO, replacing the fired Carleton "Carly" Fiorina, speculation centered immediately on who would lead NCR.
Analysts say they don't have a clue. But at least one said -- in partial jest -- there's a perfect candidate who happens to be available: Fiorina. "Some critics might say Mark is a bit boring, and I don't necessarily agree," said Lou Agosta of Forrester Research. "But maybe HP needs someone who is a bit boring and NCR needs someone with a little more flash and pizazz (like Fiorina).
