Speaking for the East Dubuque unit of the American Legion, Carl Burroughs thanks the community for their generosity resulting in a successful Poppy Day sale on Saturday, May 27. Services at the East Dubuque Cemetery following theMemorial Day Parade Monday, May 29, included a number of Legion members. Delbert Belken was the emcee. Also participating were Sister Mary Owen Haggerty, O.P., and Rev. James Parker, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Success in their bakery business has enabled Peggy and Todd Hoppman to expand their business, Lunchbox Bakery & Cafe, by moving into larger quarters. The Hoppmans have purchased the building at 280 Sinsinawa, previously owned by Carl Burroughs, and are in the process of extensive remodeling. The east end of the building will be converted for use by bakery and cafe customers; the west end will be the bakery production area.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, just ask Ken VanHooijdonk of Pasadena who wanted to go bear hunting, but failed to draw a permit for the special Western Maryland season that recently closed after three days when hunters met DNR's quota of 41 bruins. Seeing that he couldn't hunt here, Ken headed to the Down East country of Maine with his dad Fred and friend Mark Burroughs, also of Pasadena, in tow. Ken's brother Carl who lives in Maine suggested Clayton Blake of Breakneck Mountain Guide Service in Alexanda as their guide. It was a good decision.

Franklin Burroughs of Bowdoinham has received the John Burroughs 2009 Medal Award for his book "Confluence: Merrymeeting Bay. The John Burroughs Medal has been given annually since 1926 for a book that combines scientific accuracy, firsthand field work and creative natural-history writing in the United States. Past medalists include Rachel Carson, Joseph Wood Krutch, Loren Eisley, Paul Brooks, John Hay, Ann Zwinger, Barry Lopez, Gary Nabhan, Robert Pyle, Richard Nelson, Carl Safina and Ted Levin.
