Our annual look at what's new at the ski areas reveals only some exciting improvements such as new lifts and trails. Predominant this year are more subtle changes, such as new grooming machines and improved snowmaking. Closest to home, Campgaw Mountain has upgraded its racing programs, and the terrain park and tubing hill continue to be developed. Mt. Peter has constructed a glass-enclosed pavilion outfitted with picnic tables, providing a new spot to eat and socialize. Tuxedo Ridge's base lodge has recently been redone, the lifts have been recabled and repainted, and the race programs revitalized.

When I started snowboarding, I never thought I'd want to ride park. Which is to say, I'm a wimp, I value my dental work, and I have always associated terrain parks with 14-year-old boys who look like wealthy hobos and would consider me on a social par with their grandmothers. So the fact that I was brimming with excitement about my lesson at Carinrhia, Mount Snow's dedicated terrain peak, came somewhat as a surprise to me. Carinrhia, the resort's showpiece, opened in 2008 to rave reviews from shredders of all disciplines and boasts 125 freestyle features in eight parks.
