Canadian civil law allowed the late Keith Magnuson's family what U.S. law would not -- millions from a rental car company that would owe nothing had his accident occurred in the United States.
A St. Louis County jury deliberated for just under two hours Friday before issuing the $9.5 million verdict for Magnuson's wife, Cindy, and their two grown children. The former Chicago Blackhawks hockey player died in Toronto in 2003 while riding in a rental car driven by Rob Ramage, a friend and former St. Louis Blues defenseman.

The lawyer for Rob Ramage admitted in court Thursday that the former St. Louis Blues player is responsible for the death of his friend and former hockey colleague Keith Magnuson.
Ramage, 48, was at the wheel of a rental car that ran head-on into a sport-utility vehicle in Toronto in December 2003, killing the 56-year-old Magnuson.
