I passed about five car accidents on the way to my brother's house on Long Island on Sunday. And even though none of them appeared to be serious, nothing ruins your day like a dented fender. Of course, the awful traffic heading onto - and across - the George Washington Bridge didn't help, but there was a Yankees game at 1. (Why don't they move to Alabama?) The four theories of the press have long dominated in journalism education and research and arguably do a good job of describing media systems in the West. However, it is hard to fit Asian media systems into the existing theories. This paper re-examines the four press theories and identifies the difficulties in using the theories as a guide to understand media systems in Asia.
