  • For teenagers, getting a driver's license is a rite of passage and another step toward independence. For parents, it can mean less time spent carting a child around or help with running errands. But it can be difficult balancing safety with independence. There are many worrisome statistics surrounding teen driving. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year-olds. Major factors contributing to fatal car accidents involving teen drivers include inexperience, alcohol, drugs, speeding and distractions such as music, passengers and cell phones. Alarmingly, studies have shown that when there is just one other passenger in the car with a teen driver, the risk of having a fatal accident doubles and with two or more passengers, the risk goes up fivefold. • With schools across the state opening this month, the West Virginia Board of Education and the West Virginia Department of Education want to remind motorists to exercise extra caution. Each year in West Virginia, about 224,000 students climb aboard 3,700 buses that travel more than 48 million miles to and from school. We ask motorists to be extremely cautious and to obey the bus signals, while the students are being loaded and unloaded from the bus, said state Superintendent Jorea Marple. School buses, by all measures, are the safest motor vehicle on the highway. But in this electronic age, distracted driving is leading to more and more accidents. It is our responsibility as parents, students, bus operators, motorists and school administrators to provide a safe ride for our children. Th...

Around the same time a young man drove away from a Goodwill store. Within minutes, the 20-year-old ran a red light, hitting Doyle's car in a T-bone crash that killed the 61-year-old woman.

  • Stop us if you've heard this one, but we think that waiting nearly two years to ban hand-held cell phone use in moving vehicles is about 10 years too long. The bill that Gov. Schwarzenegger signed into law this month mandates hands-free cell phone use only. Yabbers who make wide left turns on yellow lights with a cell phone glued to their heads have until July 2008 to get a hands-free device or shut up.

  • Car accidents, medical situations and other emergencies are often scenes of confusion, which makes contacting family members and friends difficult. Of course, many people carry cell phones with the names and numbers of their emergency contacts, but determining which number to call can be difficult for emergency service personnel on the scene. Consequently, many people, including emergency responders, have been embracing the "In Case of Emergency" or "ICE Campaign" that designates a specific emergency contact in a cell phone's phonebook.
