NEW YORK - During the recent nosedive in the stock market, as some investors frantically pulled their money out of stocks, the veterans of Wall Street started throwing around the word "capitulation. In the context of the market, it's a term that means the bulk of investors have given up and sold everything they can - and many experts say it's the best time to buy.
The recent decade was the worst performing decade in US history due to the severe bear markets of 2000 and 2007. The Institutional Index (XII) is incredibly useful in analyzing this period. It is interesting to note that XII made a perfect 61.8% Fibonacci retracement at the 2007 high. The S&P in terms of gold topped in 1999 and double topped in 2000, confirming the "real" top in 2000. It was 2000 that had the extremes in valuation. Another useful tool is knowing the long wave cycle. This allows traders to know where they are in the cycle and by knowing where they are, they can ascertain what comes next.

The die has been cast. Obama's "nearly complete capitulation to the hostage-taking demands of Republican extremists," as an editorial in the normally sedate New York Times described the deal to raise the debt ceiling, is a disaster in the making. It rules out a vigorous government response to the persistent economic stagnation in which joblessness, housing foreclosures and an ever-widening gap between the top 2 percent and the rest of Americans have become the norm. But to use the word "capitulation" is too kind, since this president, as was Bill Clinton before him, is clearly one of those "New Democrats" who welcomes the opportunity to jettison the legacy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt as outmoded political baggage. Otherwise, why would Obama have reached for a "grand bargain" in which h...

Investors flashed a rare glimpse of optimism Monday about global efforts to ease credit and bought up bargain-priced stocks in a frenzy, staging the largest one-day rally in Wall Street history and signaling that the market may have hit bottom after last week's dramatic losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 936 points, or 11 percent, mirroring gigantic gains in European stock indexes set off by forceful joint action to bolster banks over the weekend and a central bank move to flood the banking system with dollars. In one fell swoop, indexes recovered more than half of last week's 18 percent losses. And just as the stock plunge earlier this month was the worst since the 1930s, yesterday's gains were the best since the Depression era.

On a late October day when the Dow dropped more than 300 points, a Fox News banner flashed, "Stocks plunge on fears of recession," while a reporter said good news on home sales had stemmed losses on Wall Street. The financial crisis did have one positive effect on cable's general news channels; it kept them from talking interminably about a missing Florida toddler or Madonna's divorce, stories that otherwise would have dominated their agendas for days on end.

Steve Jobs, who sparked a revolution in the technology industry and then presided over it as Silicon Valley's radiant Sun King, died Wednesday. The incandescent center of a tech universe around which all the other planets revolved, Jobs had a genius for stylish design and a boyish sense of what was "cool." He was 56 when he died, ahead of his time to the very end. According to a spokesman for Apple Inc. -- the company Jobs co- founded when he was just 21, and turned into one of the world's great industrial design houses -- he suffered from a recurrence of the pancreatic cancer for which he had undergone surgery in 2004. Jobs had taken his third leave of absence from the company in January of this year, and made the final capitulation to his failing health on Aug. 24, when he resigned as...

LONDON (Reuters) - Gold will stay strong due to a lack of alternative havens for investors operating in a slowing global economy, top performing commodity fund managers told Reuters after taking a defensive approach and going into cash during September's gold selloff. We consider the current weakness in gold as temporary and also the slump in commodity prices should come to an end soon," said Kurt Hug, an investment adviser for thePrecious Metals Fund.
