Capitol Federal Financial (Nasdaq: CFFN) on Friday reported net income of $13.6 million in the quarter ending March 31, compared with $17.5 million for the same quarter a year ago. AUGUSTA - The political spotlight is once again focused on Maine's two U.S. senators as Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill grapple with a host of contentious issues during a pivotal election year. From financial reform to a federal cap-and-trade system for greenhouse gases, there is no shortage of weighty and often partisan issues pending before Congress this year. And Maine's two moderate senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, could play major roles in shaping and deciding the fate of major legislative initiatives.

But, once the crisis hit, it was the Fed's innovative, try-anything response that saved the country from what might have been another Great Depression. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke deserves a public "attaboy" for finding ways to pump liquidity into credit markets that were on the verge of freezing up tight. Instead, he's getting a congressional raspberry.
The Capital-Journal Capitol Federal Financial reported a 58 percent increase in net income in its fiscal year ended Sept. 30, as compared with earnings in the previous year, the company announced Wednesday.
While Congress works on a federal stimulus package that includes $30 billion set aside as financial incentives for the energy sector, Arizona's largest utilities are developing plans to use the state's portion of the additional money to expand existing energy- efficiency programs. On Jan. 27, the Arizona Corporation Commission sent a letter to APS, Tucson Electric Power/UniSource Energy and Southwest Gas, explaining that they will be expected to "be prepared to act quickly on behalf of their customers" if the federal government were to double the amount of money it contributes to states' energy- efficiency programs.
People across the country learned Thursday morning what Topekans and other consumers across the state have known for years, Capitol Federal Savings Bank is a financial institution that can be trusted. NBC's "Today Show" put its spotlight squarely on Capitol Federal during a segment devoted to a financial institution that had held true to its values and high standards while many financial institutions were jeopardizing their futures by taking unnecessary risks.
