Using Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), this paper establishes a statistically significant link between CPI and foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to 54 developing and developed countries. In addition to each country's CPI, several location and economic characteristics are also postulated to influence FDI. For a group of 22 developing countries, the paper then simulates the impact of an improvement in the CPI score on FDI. This simulation shows that a one point improvement in CPI would generate on average additional FDI of 0.5% of GDP. For instance, the gain in annual FDI would be $7.5 billion for India and $18 billion for China. The paper further simulates the effects of larger FDI on the generation of taxable income and tax revenues in each country us...

Foreign direct investment (FDI), as pointed out by Kindleberger, arises when the host country has an investment opportunity that it cannot exploit by itself because it lacks the means or technical know-how, or because of market incompleteness. A multinational corporation (MNC) may be able to exploit such an opportunity because it has the necessary capital, technology, and managerial skills to do so. In this article, the authors describe some stylized facts about expropriation episodes and other lessons learned from the empirical literature on FDI. The authors then summarize some of the main theories attempting to explain the effects of expropriation on investment and growth. Finally, they develop a theory that relates each type of expropriation to political instability and concentration...

Consumer price inflation remains moderate even though the cyclical upturn in the Norwegian economy is in a mature phase. Underlying inflation has been fairly stable and ranged between 1% and 1 1/2% over a longer period. Growth in the Norwegian economy has been strong. High income growth and high income expectations, combined with low interest rates, have led to brisk growth in demand in the business, household and public sectors. So far, there are few signs of a slowdown in the Norwegian economy. There are prospects that the strong expansion will be sustained for a longer period than previously envisaged. The growth outlook for the world economy remains favorable. Monetary policy cannot fine-tune developments in the economy, but must counter the effects of large disturbances to the econ...
