An expanding economy, new technologies, and changing consumer preferences provided growth opportunities for firms in interwar Australia. This period saw an increase in the number of large-scale firms in mining, manufacturing, and a wide range of service industries. Firms unable to rely solely on retained earnings to fund expansion turned to the domestic stock exchanges. A new data set of capital raisings constructed from reports of prospectuses published in the financial press forms the basis for the conclusion that many firms used substantial injections of equity finance to augment internally generated sources of funds. This paper empirically examines the spatial and temporal responses of the New York City economy to a large, but spatially concentrated, exogenous shock to its capital stock: the terrorist attacks of Sep 11, 2001. The paper utilizes data before and after Sep 11 to study the response because it is believed that the size, location, and timing of the shock were unanticipated, and because the shock was large enough to create substantial dislocations in the city's economy. Analysis reveals that New York City's economy was surprisingly resilient to the Sep 11 attacks and the damage they caused, but the shock was associated with significant changes, particularly in the spatial distribution of activities. Furthermore, the particular character of the city's economy and the shock it sustained play...

SAN FRANCISCO -- Venture capitalists hoping to strike it rich are increasingly betting on the entrepreneurial skills of U.S. immigrants -- a melting pot that has already cooked up more than $500 billion in shareholder wealth, according to a study to be released today.
Immigrants launched nearly one in every five U.S. startups that relied on venture capital before turning to the stock market during a 35-year period ended in 2005, based on data compiled by two research groups, the National Foundation for American Policy and Content First.
