State legislators in both Indiana and Kentucky are supposed to be hard at work today, meeting in special sessions in their respective capitols, to wrestle with crafting budget plans that match the states' spending to declining tax revenues.
It is, perhaps, appropriate they're meeting a few days in advance of the season the Founding Fathers said should be celebrated with bonfires and fireworks because if the rhetoric of legislative leaders leading up to the sessions indicate what is to come, residents of both states will be treated to stupendous displays of red-and-blue verbal pyrotechnics.
